New report is published on Environment and Security
The report "Environment and Security in the Amu Darya river basin" published by UNEP on 11 July 2011 states that water resources of the Amu Darya river can become a source of peace and security in the region.
Current challenges in the basin are related to hydropower projects, inefficient irrigation systems, growing populations and climate change, which will require environmental diplomacy. The report approaches each subject from an environment and security perspective, and sets recommendations for tackling these issues.
