Water sharing between Central Asian countries has been conflicting for quite a long time already.

Dr. Smith's research focuses on water and conflict over water and using GIS in natural hazards and water management. He is a Member of an NGO with special consultative status with the United Nations, and he has received travel and research grants from the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, Fulbright program, IREX, and others in Central Asia and Iran. He has many peer-reviewed publications such as "Water and Cities in Arid Central Asia"; "Environmental Security and Shared Water Resources in Post-Soviet Central Asia"; "Climate Change, Climate Variability, and Conflict in the Aral Sea Basin" etc.
Currently he is working on his next publication on the Roghun project in Tajikistan. He wanted to become a member of Amu Dary Basin Network in order to increase interaction with experts in the region, and information exchange. his dissertation at the University of Chicago was entitled "Water Use Problems in Soviet Uzbekistan (1990) and was supported by a Fulbright grant to spend one year in Uzbekistan. he further wants to deepen his understanding of the region and interact with colleagues through the network.
